How to Apply to the PhD Program

All application materials should be submitted electronically through the ApplyYourself application system. Admission decisions will be communicated to applicants using this system. Your admission decision will be emailed to you after your application has been reviewed by the ISyE program and your transcripts and any credentials have been authenticated by the Graduate School.

A minimum undergraduate grade point average of (GPA) of 3.0 on a four-point scale is the preferred standard for admission. Students whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from one of the following English proficiency examinations: TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS. 

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

The GRE General Test is required for students applying to the PhD program. We do not impose a specific minimum GRE score.

Application Deadline for Fall Semester Admission

Applicants for fall semester admission who wish to be considered for financial aid should submit their applications by December 15 of the previous year. Applications received after December 15 will be reviewed for admission if space is available.

Application Deadline for Spring Semester Admission

The application deadline for spring semester admission is October 15 of the previous year.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts or academic records should be uploaded directly to the online application. Please do not mail in paper copies of your transcripts, there is no need for official transcripts or academic records for initial review. If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.

Three Letters of Recommendation

Paper copies can be accepted, but you are strongly encouraged to submit letters via ApplyYourself. If you choose to submit paper copies, they should be mailed to Mr. John Gardner, Mechanical Engineering, 111 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455

English Language Test Scores (TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS) are required for applicants whose native language is not English

Scores should be entered in the Test Information-Self-Reported field in ApplyYourself. Your scoresheet (or a screenshot) should be uploaded directly to the online application as 'Upload 1' under 'Program Supplementary Information'. Please do not mail in paper copies of your scoresheet. ETS does not send copies of the scores to the program. If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.

GRE Scores

The PhD program requires GRE scores for admission. Scores should be entered in the Test Information-Self-Reported field in ApplyYourself. Your scoresheet (or a screenshot) should be uploaded directly to the online application as 'Upload 2' under 'Program Supplementary Information'. Please do not mail in paper copies of your scoresheet. Even if you had your scores sent, you must upload your scoresheet or screenshot directly to the online application. If you are admitted, the University will then request official copies of this material.
